FAQ

The Answers You Need

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE PROCESS FROM START TO JOB COMPLETION?

Sure! First is your consultation. Here we’ll listen to your ideas and discuss possible solutions. Then we’ll produce your design/quote. Once the design/quote is accepted we secure a start date and collect the 50% deposit. The final walkthrough is performed upon completion of the project. At this time we’ll also collect final payment and present you with a post-installation maintenance plan.

DO YOU WARRANTY YOUR PLANTS?

Yes, if you have an irrigation system. All plant material has a specific watering requirement in order to thrive, and we can only guarantee that with an irrigation system coupled with our watering schedule. However, we do handle warranties on a case by case basis. It’s important to us that your plants not only survive, but thrive. We work closely with all clients in ensuring the plants are getting the proper amount of water. Technological advancements have made it pretty easy to setup temporary watering systems.  We’ll review these options depending on your site/plant requirements and come up with a good plan.

DO YOU ADD SOIL WHEN INSTALLING PLANTS?

Yes. All we use high quality planting soil for all installations. The quality of the soil surrounding plants is a big part of their success plan.  If it’s a newly created planting bed we’ll probably need to add a decent amount of quality soil. If it’s an existing bed we still add the soil, but less is usually needed.

WHO SUPPLY’S OUR PLANTS?

We have relationships with multiple suppliers in our area and usually use multiple vendors for a single project. Please let us know and we’d be more than happy to send over details about the specific suppliers for your project.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE POST INSTALLATION WATERING?

Post installation watering is a critical part of promoting a healthy growing environment. We highly recommend irrigation systems but also realize that some properties don’t have them. If you don’t have a sprinkler system, we’ll work with you in determining the best way to ensure the plants get watered properly. One solution would be to install temporary above ground sprinklers, which can be set up to hose bibs with timers on them. We have documentation for properly scheduling an irrigation system

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT BEFORE THE SERVICE?

After the design is approved and the deposit is accepted, you’ll receive an email notification with the scheduled job date. We then send a second notification once your job has been Dispatched (usually 24 hours before the service). You’ll also receive a notification if this changes (usually due to weather). Upon completion of the service you’ll receive an email with details about the completed service and also an area for you to submit your thoughts/concerns to our office for review.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN YOUR BED-WEEDING SERVICE?

Bed-weeding is a monthly service that our mowing crews handle while performing the mowing service. It’s intended to stay on top of weed growth in flower beds, in-between Landscape Cleanup services. *We highly recommend a minimum of one cleanup service per season.

DO YOU USE CHEMICALS?

We do our best to minimize chemical usage but we do spot spray with low concentrated roundup. We try and hand-pull weeds as much as possible.

DO I NEED A CLEANUP IF I SIGN UP FOR BED-WEEDING?

Yes.  Bed-weeding is not a substitute for a Landscape Cleanup.  It’s purpose is to maintain flower beds in-between cleanups.

CAN I SIGNUP FOR BED-WEEDING ONLY?

Yes. *We may require a one-time flower bed cleaning fee if no cleanup has been performed.

WHAT’S IN YOUR SOIL AMENDMENT?

For this application we’re using Granular Healthy Grow by Holganix. This is the cornerstone of our lawn applications, Holganix. We’re big believers in creating a healthy lush lawn by treating the soil underneath. Holganix’s soil amendment creates a very healthy soil environment by infusing the soil with live organic matter. We’ve seen amazing results after 1-2 full seasons of using Holganix.

HOW DO YOU TREAT THE WEEDS IN THE LAWN?

We spot spray for weeds using a 4 gallon backpack sprayer. It’s always our goal to use the least amount of chemicals possible when treating your lawn. Overuse of chemicals on lawns will damage the turf and it’s terrible for the environment. We approach each lawn with the ultimate goal of treating all of the weeds in the turf.

WHEN IS THE SERVICE PERFORMED?

We’re starting at the end of August and will continue through the end of October, weather permitting.

HOW DO WE KNOW THE SERVICE DATE?

We send email notifications with your scheduled job date soon after signup. You’ll then receive a second notification once your job has been Dispatched (usually within 24 hours of service). Once the service is completed we’ll send your post service notification.

DO I NEED TO BE HOME WHEN THE SERVICE IS PERFORMED?

No, most of our clients are not home when the service is performed. We keep you updated with email notifications so you don’t have to worry about the lawn.

WHAT’S INCLUDED WITH THE SHRUB TRIMMING SERVICE?

Trimming of all shrubs and hedges for appropriate time of year.  The time of season determines if certain species of plant is to be trimmed.

WHEN IS THE SERVICE PERFORMED?

We offer the service during Spring, Summer, and Fall.

DO YOU REMOVE THE DEBRIS AFTER TRIMMING?

Yes.  We bring the debris to our shop for disposal.

WHAT DOES A ONE TIME CLEANUP INCLUDE?

Weeding and re-edging of existing flower beds, fresh mulch applied, leaf/small debris removal (pre-emergent herbicide is applied to flower beds before mulching during spring time only).

HOW MANY INCHES (DEPTH) OF MULCH ARE INSTALLED?

Our goal is to install between 1″-2″ of fresh mulch during our cleanups. If you go too deep with the mulch it can damage the plant material, and if it’s too thin it won’t provide enough protection. 1″-2″ is generally accepted as standard for our area (See the USDA Plant Hardiness Map).

DO YOU TRIM THE TREES ON THE PROPERTY DURING THE CLEANUP?

Anything over 12′ tall is considered “Tree Work” and we unfortunately don’t have the equipment/skills necessary at this time to handle it safely.  We can help you find a tree contractor.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE CLEANUP SERVICE IS COMPLETED?

The crew updates their smartphones when the service is completed, and then we send you an email notification with details.

DO YOU MOW THE GRASS DURING A CLEANUP?

Yes, the crew mows the grass while there for the cleanup. If the grass is severely overgrown there may be an additional fee assessed.

DID YOU KNOW?

We offer brown colored mulch, which keeps its color longer due to the high quality colorant that our suppliers use. It’s both non-toxic and environmentally safe. It’s shipped straight from WV to our shop.  Also, existing bed edges are re-edged to a depth of 2-3″, which has been proven to be the best depth for water drainage and appearance. Black mulch is available upon request at an additional charge.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

One time cleanups are billed at $145 per hour for a 3-person crew plus $50 for each cubic yard of mulch installed. For more information please see our pricing page. One Time Cleanups are billed separately from contract services and for most cases we take a cc saved on file and bill immediately upon completion of the job.

WHAT’S INCLUDED WITH THE LAWN FERTILIZER PROGRAM?

The program consists of 6 lawn applications and also includes fall aeration/seeding.

DO YOU APPLY SEED TO BARE AREAS?

Our team spot seeds during spring and fall visits. Summer temps are too hot for seed to germinate.

IS COMPOST TOP-DRESSING INCLUDED?

No but you can easily add it to your program, just let us know

IS LIME APPLICATION INCLUDED?

As of 2019, Lime Application and Soil Tests are Addons for our Lawn Fertilizer Program and are not included with the program pricing. Most lawns don’t need Lime but once every 3 years so it did not make sense for us to apply it each year so we’ve set it up as an addon moving forward. Ask for more info if interested.

WHY THE “OFL” CLEANUP PROGRAM?

Because it’s what separates your property from everyone else’s. It’s keeps the mulch beds looking great all year long.  This approach will not only keep your mulch and flower beds looking better, it will keep them healthier and save a lot of money compared to doing 2-3 separate cleanups.  One time cleanups have a larger cost due to the overgrowth, which can be avoided with our program.  You’ll end up spending a lot less in the long run!

WHAT ABOUT A ONE TIME CLEANUP?

You will still get the service, expertise and quality outcome as the Spring and Fall Cleanup visits. Our one time cleanups are billed at $145 per hour for a 3 person crew plus $50 per cubic yard of mulch installed. Please note that we currently only offer one time cleanups to customers who are also signed up for one of our annual maintenance programs.

WHAT DOES “OFL'S” DELUXE CLEANUP PROGRAM INCLUDE?

Our expert experience has led to our three cleanup program. It’s designed to keep your property looking great through each season. Below is our proven process for managing the long-term beautification of your landscape.

  • 1st Clean-up (Spring Cleanup): Typically during the spring. This opens your lawn/landscape up from a cold winter. OFL weeds, re-edge’s existing flower beds, trims shrubs/ hedges, and cleans up leaf/small debris removal. After that we apply a pre-emergent herbicide to the flower beds before adding our fresh double shredded hardwood mulch.

  • 2nd Clean-up (Fall Cleanup): After summer, usually during the fall months. This includes all the services in the 1st cleanup, minus leaf removal and pre-emergent. *Leaf Removal is in November/December and is an available add-on to the program.

  • 3rd Cleanup-up (Winter Cleanup): During January/February, the winter cleanup is intended to give the property a “once-over” to gather organic debris that collect on the property during the winter months *Leaf Removal is in November/December and is an available add-on to the program.

  • 5 Bed Weeding Visits: These occur between our scheduled cleanups, ensuring the mulch beds stay weed free.

  • 1 Summer Trimming Visit: During the summer, shrubs and hedges need a light trimming to “hold them over” until our Fall Cleanup.

WHAT DOES “OFL'S” STANDARD CLEANUP PROGRAM INCLUDE?

3 Landscape Cleanups Only (No Bed Weeding Visits/No Summer Shrub Trimming Visit)

WHEN DOES THE SEASON START/STOP?

The mowing season starts anywhere from March 15th through the first or second week of April. Each season is different due to the weather.  We wrap up the mowing season between the last week of October and the last week of November. Each property is a little different and we’ll make sure to cut accordingly. At this point we stop mowing and begin our fall cleanup and leaf removal for customers who want to prepare their property for the winter months.

HOW OFTEN/WHICH DAY OF THE WEEK DO YOU MOW?

During the springtime we mow every 7-10 days due to the fast growing conditions.  During the summer we slow to more of a 7-14 day cycle due to the heat. The turf begins to grow fast again during the Fall and we switch to more of a 7-10 day schedule before leading into November when we wrap up the season.  We’ve learned it’s difficult to promise a day of the week due to the ever changing weather. We’ll let you know the “target” day of the week for your cuts via your scheduling notifications.  If weather throws us off schedule we’ll work over the next couple of weeks to get back to our regular rotation as fast as possible.

HOW SOON CAN YOU PERFORM THE FIRST SERVICE? *IN SEASON ONLY

Our goal is to get your first cut taken care of within 48 hours of signing up.  Sometimes the weather holds us up for a day or so but we catch up really fast! Also, if you signup later in the week, your first mow could be carried over to Monday.  Don’t worry though, we’ll have you on a regular schedule after the first cut.

WHAT TIMES OF THE DAY DO YOUR CREWS TYPICALLY START MOWING?

We start our day at the OFL offices around 6:30am and it’s usually after 7:30am by the time we get to our first mowing locations.

HOW SHORT DO YOU CUT THE GRASS?

The ideal mowing height for cool season turf is between 2.5 -4”, depending on current weather conditions. We set our equipment to this range for several reasons. First, mowing a lawn too low supports not the only scalping danger but cutting off more than one-third of the height of grass in any single mowing also is very stressful and damaging to lawns.  If you let your grass grow to about four inches and then mow it down to two, for example, you may open the door to disease or further weed growth—even if two inches is the proper height for the grass. At OFL our Annual Mowing Program ensures that we will constantly take care of your lawn all season.

DO YOU OFFER “ONE-TIME” CUTS?

We prefer seasonal agreements. From years of experience and best practices you will benefit from not only an eye-catching lawn appearance, but also receive a huge discount per mow.  While skipping a mowing may seem harmless it can cause lasting damage. Extended gaps between mowing allow lawns to grow tall and shaggy rather than thick and dense. If done repeatedly, fewer blades of grass will grow because tall grass will block out the sun. When that tall grass finally is mowed, the gaps between the blades will be large enough for weeds to take hold. Did you know that frequent mowing is the single biggest reason why golf courses and professional baseball diamonds tend to look lusher than neighborhood yards? At OFL our Annual Mowing Program ensures that we will constantly take care of your lawn all season. If you still prefer the one time cut we charge $65 per half hour w/1 hour minimum for a 2 person mowing crew and we can usually get it taken care of within a couple of days.

DO YOU BAG GRASS CLIPPINGS?

We highly recommend AGAINST bagging your grass clippings.  Redistributing the grass clippings throughout the lawn is an essential part of a well rounded nutrient program for the turf areas.  Grass clippings should be considered part of the fertilizer program for your lawn.  The clippings are packed with extremely important nutrients/microorganisms for the soil/turf, and they also help turn the grass to a perfect shade of green. We recommend more regular mowing if you’re experiencing a grass clipping issue with your property. Nothing a few adjustments won’t take care of.

DO I NEED TO PREPARE THE LAWN BEFORE EACH MOWING VISIT?

Please remove toys/hoses/etc. from the lawn before each visit (OFL is not responsible for damage to any man made object left in the lawn prior to mowing service). Our crew leaders inspect the lawn before each visit but we really appreciate your help with this. Also, please unlock any gates on the property so our equipment can get through.

WHY DID WE SKIP THE PROPERTY TODAY?

Most likely because the grass was too short. Weather conditions also could be a factor. You’ll receive an email notification if your lawn is skipped. The message will include details as to why you were skipped. We bump the schedule and pickup where we left off when it rains, so you won’t have to wait until the next round of mowing to get cut.

WHAT IS AERATION/SEEDING?

Core aeration is a form of lawn aeration where a series of plugs/cores are removed from your lawn.  The machine is the size of a lawn mower and operates comparably.  After the cores/plugs are removed, the area then has seed broadcast over it’s entirety.

IS THE AERATION/SEEDING SERVICE INCLUDED WITH THE LAWN FERTILIZER PROGRAM?

Yes. Currently our lawn care program includes 6 lawn care applications and aeration/seeding in the Fall.

WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF AERATION/SEEDING?

Aeration helps reduce soil compaction and thatch buildup. The cores/plugs create an avenue for oxygen to flow through the soil, increasing overall conditions. The seeding that is applied afterwards promotes fresh grass growth for patchy/damaged areas.

WHEN’S THE BEST TIME FOR AERATION/SEEDING?

For cool-season grass, early Fall is the best time of year. Some also have another aeration only service for the Spring, depending on the properties soil conditions. Warm-season grass benefits the most from aeration/seeding late Spring, early Summer.

HOW DEEP ARE THE PLUGS/CORES?

We aim for a target depth of 2″-3″ but it depends on the current site conditions and is not guaranteed. Watering the lawn before the service helps soften up the soil and is recommended.

HOW MUCH SEED IS APPLIED AFTER AERATION?

4lbs of Certified Tall Fescue Blend per 1000 sqft of turf applied.

MOWING INFORMATION

Beginning in early April and continuing through November, with approx. 25-30 mows (annual avg. is 28 cuts), OFL will maintain the ideal lawn height of 2 ¾” to 4”.  To ensure quality, all mower blades are sharpened daily.  Turf areas will be mowed with walk-behind and/or riding mowers.

  • String Trimmer: Along with regular mowing, OFL will trim around the “hard to reach areas” like flower beds, fence lines, sidewalks, walls, and trees

  • Edging: In conjunction with mowing, OFL will edge all sidewalks, curbs, driveways, and walkways.  All debris from edging will be blown clean from all affected hard surfaces

  • Blowing: All grass clippings that are not recycled back into your lawn for nutrients will be blown off of driveway, patio, sidewalk, curbs, and walkways

  • Bagging: Upon special request, OFL will bag the grass clippings that are not recycled back into your lawn at an additional cost
